Healthy Oatmeal Scones

I love scones! What I don’t love about them is the calories and fat. The average bakery scone could cost as much as 450 calories, with 10g or more of fat, and hardly any nutritional boost.

My daughter found a great scones recipe at These are half the calories and fat (if not more), and they also are higher in fiber with dried fruit and oatmeal. But the best thing is they taste great.

Lauren used chopped mixed dried fruit, but you could do anything with this basic recipe. You could exchange the dried fruit for some cinnamon and chopped apple for a moister scone.  That would be good, think I’ll try that myself!

1 1/4 cups wheat flour
3/4 cup old fashioned oats
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup dried fruit (raisins, currants, cranberries,
etc.) (optional)
1/4 cup light butter or margarine
2/3 cup buttermilk
1 tablespoon half-and-half (optional)
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
extra sugar
1 tablespoon buttermilk (for brushing)

Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

1. Mix flour, oats, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

2. Cut in butter until the size of bread crumbs.

3. Add dried fruit.

4. In a separate bowl mix together wet ingredients.
5. Gradually mix together wet and dry ingredients to form a soft, slightly sticky dough.
6. Move dough onto a floured surface and form the dough into an 8 inch circle.

7. Cut into 8 pie shapes, brush with buttermilk and sprinkle with sugar.

8. Bake for 15 minutes until toothpick comes out clean.
